The Finnish Startup Community has launched a new website that, for the first time, brings together key figures on Finland’s startup ecosystem in one place. The platform compiles data on topics such as the number of startups, growth, employment, and investments, offering a comprehensive overview of the ecosystem’s development.
The service allows users to track, for example, the number of startups, developments in revenue and employment, as well as research and development investments. At the same time, the website highlights the rapid growth of the startup ecosystem and its increasing importance to the Finnish economy. The data can be explored across multiple years and from different perspectives, helping to better understand both the growth and structure of the ecosystem.
A comprehensive view of startups through open data
The data compiled on the website shows that in 2023, there were approximately 4,200 startups operating in Finland. Their combined revenue was around EUR 12 billion, and they employed approximately 46,000 people globally. Startups’ total research and development investments amounted to approximately EUR 785 million. To date, Finland has also produced 20 so-called unicorns, startups that have reached a valuation of over one billion US dollars.
“Startups are widely discussed, but the overall picture is often fragmented across different sources. The purpose of this website is to bring key information together in one place and make company development visible through data. It also helps improve understanding of what startups are and why they matter for the economy,” says Youssef Zad, Chief Economist at the Finnish Startup Community.
The website has been designed especially for policymakers, media, and ecosystem stakeholders. It provides a clear and accessible view of how Finland’s startup field is evolving and what role it plays in driving economic growth.
“When we talk about economic growth, innovation, and new jobs, startups are playing an increasingly central role. That is why it is important that the discussion is based on clear, reliable, and open data,” Zad says.
The new website is freely accessible online to everyone:
